The end of the year is still a little more than a month away, but unless something unexpected happens, you can easily bet your money on that Illinois by Sufjan Stevens will top lots of year end lists as the best album of 2005 (Currently ranked as the best by both RateYourMusic and Acclaimed Music).
Needless to say I’ve wanted to listen to the album for quite some time (just to be able to judge it myself) and last week I finally was able to borrow it from the library.
I’ve previously tried to listen to his last two albums Greetings From Michigan and Seven Swans without being overly convinced about the magic of Sufjan, but during this – my first listening session of Illinois – something seems to be happening/changing.
The songs are quiet (well, almost all of them), melodic, beautiful, full of atmosphere and have no problems keeping my attention.
Will it top my year end list? Most likely not (too early to tell)! But definitely worth buying!
